S.M. Atkins Building Contractors were delighted to win the 2012 LABC South East Region Building Excellence Award for Best Domestic Extension, recognising the highest standards of construction across the region. The award celebrated the quality of workmanship, compliance with Building Regulations, sustainability, accessibility and customer satisfaction. Steve Atkins described the award as “testament to the quality of our workmanship.”

The award-winning project, The Coach House, involved the complete refurbishment of a historic three-storey former stable and coach house, together with a complex two-storey extension on a challenging sloping site. Significant structural work was required, including piling, new steelwork, a redesigned staircase and the construction of a highly complex roof within the existing vaulted structure. Particular care was taken to match the original brickwork, Flemish bond and detailing so precisely that the new extension is almost indistinguishable from the original building.

The success of the project was a result of exceptional craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail and close collaboration between S.M. Atkins, the clients, architect and planning team. Despite the technical challenges, the project was delivered to an outstanding standard, demonstrating the company’s commitment to quality, professional project management and personal service.
